In the glass. Where this layer comes to the surface in the Mâconnais, the ground is usually described as more clayey and later than on hard limestone. That follows from the clay content and the water supply, not from the rock as such.

Dark grey, often somewhat clayey shelly limestone from the Sinemurian, roughly 199.5 to 193 million years ago, deposited in a shallow, muddy sea. The layer takes its name from the gryphaea, a thick curved oyster whose shells occur in it by the thousand; ammonites and belemnites are also common. In the ground this yields flat, dark limestone shards within a fairly heavy, clayey earth.

For the vine. There is more clay in it than in the pure Jurassic limestones, so more water storage, but also a ground that warms up slowly in spring and stays heavy after rain. The limestone beds do provide shards and cracks along which roots can nevertheless go down. Slope and drainage weigh more heavily here than on most other subsoils.

Characteristic of parts of the Mâconnais, where the grey Lias marls and the limestone with gryphaea together form the lower slopes.
