In the glass. Where this substrate is planted, the wine is generally described as firm and earthy. The spread between plots is wide and the literature is thin, so this is no more than an impression. (weak indication)
Dark grey marl and clay with limestone nodules, including the Marnes à Bélemnites, deposited in a calm sea during the Pliensbachian. Belemnites, the cigar-shaped internal skeletons of squid-like animals, lie in it by the hundreds. It is soft, plastic material that forms flat, wet lower slopes and depressions in the landscape.
For the vine. Cold, heavy, water-retaining soil that warms slowly and delays budburst, with an increased risk of late frost in low positions. In a dry summer the water reserve is precisely the great advantage, provided the plot slopes enough to shed surplus water. Active lime is limited, so chlorosis plays less of a part; controlling vigour is more important here.
Forms the wet, flat lower slopes at the foot of the Lias ridges in the Côte chalonnaise; rarely planted on its own.
