Bedrock

In the glass. In the Barséquanais around Mussy and Cunfin the substrate of firm Pinot Noir for the Côte des Bar. Comparable with the Kimmeridgian marl, slightly drier and stonier. (weak indication)

Clayey, fine-grained 'hydraulic' limestone (formerly burnt for water-resistant lime) from Mussy-sur-Seine, with the harder limestone of Vermenton above it; together the Upper Oxfordian of the Côte des Bar. Deposited in a shallow sea with periods of clay input.

For the vine. Lime-rich and moderately draining: the clayey beds hold water, the hard beds drain. Well rootable on slopes; chlorosis risk from active lime.
