In the glass. Where the soil stays thin, this tends towards compact, firm wine that opens slowly and shows little volume. In a hot, dry year the main effect is above all water stress, not a flavour that comes from the stone itself.

Thick, hard, virtually unbedded limestone, formed on a warm shallow platform where fine lime mud was bound by algae and burrowing animals. The well-known Comblanchien belongs to this level and is quarried as building stone; it recurs under more than one map code, depending on how the map sheet has subdivided the sequence. At the top the rock is dolomitised, so that on weathering it breaks up into a more crumbly, sandier material; Upper Bathonian, 166.5 to 165.3 million years old.

For the vine. This is one of the hardest and most erosion-resistant rocks of the Côte and it forms the rocky upper edge of the slope, with very thin, extremely stony soils and almost no water reserve. Roots have to rely on joints and fissures, the soil warms quickly, drains completely and is strongly calcareous, so that without a colluvial cover or a marl band beneath the vine suffers in a dry year. The dolomitised top weathers to a sandier, looser soil with less active lime, although the total carbonate content remains high.

Forms the hard upper edge of the Côte de Nuits, with the well-known quarries at Comblanchien and Corgoloin.
