In the glass. In the Côte de Nuits it is associated with firmly built, structured red wine with ageing potential. That judgement cannot be separated from the steep siting and the colluvial cover that usually lies on top, so read it as a correlation and not as a cause.

Made up almost entirely of the broken stem segments of sea lilies, piled up by currents into shallow banks; the French call it calcaire à entroques. It is a coarse, granular, pale to faintly pinkish rock, hard but well drained, and it was quarried as building stone for centuries. Lower Bajocian, roughly 170.9 to 169.3 million years old.

For the vine. Hard and heavily fractured, so water drains away quickly and the roots can follow the joints deeper into the rock. The topsoil is thin and stony and warms up readily, which can favour early ripening, although aspect and slope weigh more heavily here. In extremely dry years there is a risk of stress, and the active lime content is high.

Lies beneath the lowest bands of part of the grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin and outcrops in premiers crus such as Les Cazetiers and Les Champeaux.
