In the glass. On the upper edge of the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne this gives cooler, slower plots. In the blend mainly freshness, little richness.
Brown clay with hard, hollow blocks of meulière (silicified limestone), the weathering residue of the Oligocene lacustrine limestone that caps the plateaus of the Brie and the Montagne de Reims. The silicification and the clay formed through prolonged weathering in the Neogene and Quaternary. It is the plateau cap above the vineyard; BRGM writes the notation in script lettering (AM).
For the vine. Heavy, decalcified clay with large stones: wet and cold where the clay dominates, dry and free-draining where the meulière blocks dominate. The plateaus themselves are woodland; only the highest plots, directly below the plateau edge, touch this layer and receive washed-down clay and stones from it.
