In the glass. On sandy soils, fragrant wines with fine tannin and less weight are often made, usually via lower vigour and earlier ripening rather than directly from the sand. It is a tendency, not a rule, and a thicker clay layer can overturn the picture completely.

The transition from Triassic to Jurassic, roughly 208 to 200 million years ago, when rivers spread pale quartz sand over clay on a flat coast; the top of the package continues into the lowest Jurassic, the Hettangian. When the sea returned, a shell bank formed on top, the lumachelle with the bivalve Cardinia. In the ground this yields yellow to red-brown sand, tough clay layers and hard sandstone slabs, with little lime.

For the vine. Light, permeable and quick to warm up, so an early soil in which the roots can go deep. The sand retains little water, but the clay layers beneath often form the reserve that carries the vine through the summer. Lime is scarce, so chlorosis is hardly an issue; erosion on the steeper parts, on the other hand, is a point of attention.

Characteristic of the Couchois and of the western edge of the southern Mâconnais, where the Triassic comes to the surface between granite and Jurassic, among other places near Chasselas, Leynes and Saint-Vérand.
