In the glass. Gamay from Saint-Amour and related ground: supple, fruity, medium structure. Chardonnay (Saint-Véran) is rounder and less mineral here than on the limestone of Pouilly-Fuissé.
Dark siltstones and sandstones with subordinate conglomerates, deposited in the Tournaisian and Viséan in a basin on the edge of the Morvan massif, often mixed with volcanic ash. On the southern Mâconnais sheet they form the basement beneath Saint-Vérand, Pruzilly and Saint-Amour, where the geology of the Beaujolais begins.
For the vine. Weathers to a lime-poor, acid to neutral, stony silt soil: moderately deep, reasonably free-draining and quick to warm, poor in nutrients. Precisely the ground on which Gamay thrives in the northern Beaujolais.
