In the glass. Tends towards firm, somewhat rustic wine with plenty of substance and less aromatic lift. On its own this substrate says little, because it is almost always covered by weathered material and colluvium from higher up. (weak indication)

Grey to blue-grey marl and clay with thin sandy, micaceous layers, deposited in the Toarcian in a sea that temporarily became oxygen-poor. It is a soft sequence that offers little resistance and forms depressions and gently sloping lower slopes in the landscape. Sand and mica give the clay a little more structure locally, but the profile remains heavy.

For the vine. Retentive, cool soil with a considerable water reserve, slow in spring and prone to compaction. The sandy layers improve aeration here and there, but the whole remains a clay soil that calls for slope and drainage. Little active lime means low chlorosis pressure; waterlogging and excess vigour are the real drawbacks.

Forms the soft lower slopes and depressions on the western edge of the Mâconnais and the Côte chalonnaise, usually under a blanket of colluvium.
