In the glass. Says little in itself. Where the cover is thick, a broad, soft style is reported more often than the tension of the marl slopes, but the outcome is determined by thickness, position and what lies beneath. (weak indication)
Not a marine deposit but a continental cover: sand and clay left behind in the Eocene, roughly 56 to 34 million years ago, under a warm climate on the plateaux that had already emerged by then. The flints in it come from older calcareous rocks that have dissolved. The ground is orange to red-brown, heavy clay with a sandier top layer and loose flints, and is decalcified.
For the vine. Because the lime has been leached out, active lime is virtually absent and chlorosis rarely an issue. The clay retains a great deal of water but drains slowly, so the plot is cold in spring and buds late; sand and flint at the surface ease that. Everything depends on the thickness of the cover: thin means the roots reach the limestone beneath, thick means a completely different, acidic environment.
Mainly on the plateaux of the Yonne, above the slopes of the Auxerrois and the Tonnerrois.
