In the glass. Marl slopes tend towards wine with more body and breadth than the thin limestone beds above, and for chardonnay this substrate is often associated with power and ageing potential. That link runs through water regime and soil depth, not directly through the rock type.

Deposited in a calm, slightly deeper sea than the hard platform limestones beneath, with so little sediment supply that iron-rich oolite grains and ammonites could accumulate. In between lie harder beds full of sea lily fragments, the Calcaire à Balanocrinus. In the soil it is grey-blue, crumbly marl that turns sticky when wet, with limestone slabs and rusty brown grains in between; Middle Oxfordian, roughly 159.5 to 157 million years old.

For the vine. Marl retains water, so plots on this substrate generally run into drought stress later in dry vintages than the thin soils on the hard limestone beds; how much later depends on soil depth and position on the slope. The flip side is slowness, because wet marl warms slowly in spring and is heavy to work, so the formation only works well on sufficient slope. The active lime content is generally substantial, so the choice of rootstock against chlorosis really matters here.

Forms broad bands on the upper slopes of the Côte de Beaune: it is the substrate of Corton-Charlemagne and of the upper slopes above Pommard and Volnay, and of much of the Hautes-Côtes.
