In the glass. Tends towards taut, concentrated wine with a noticeable tannin and acid structure in youth. How much of that is down to the stone and how much to soil depth, slope and the age of the vineyard cannot be disentangled.

Hard marine limestone from the Lower and Middle Bathonian, roughly 168 to 166 million years old. Part of it consists of oolite, countless tiny lime grains that grew around a nucleus in moving, shallow, warm water, as happens today on the Bahama Banks. Another part is sublithographic, that is very fine-grained and almost dense, formed in calmer lagoon water; in the Côte this is the pierre de Prémeaux, related to the Comblanchien.

For the vine. This is hard stone with little water storage of its own, so roots have to rely on cracks and fault lines. The soil above it is usually thin and very stony, warms up quickly and dries out quickly, which gives early ripening but causes stress in hot years. The lime content is high, and the site only works well where there is enough fine earth and weathered material on top, usually halfway down or at the foot of the slope.

The pierre de Prémeaux forms the uppermost band in the sequence beneath the grands crus of Vosne-Romanée; below it lie calcaire à entroques, marnes à Ostrea acuminata and clayey limestone. Which parcel sits on which band differs within each climat.
