In the glass. Tends towards taut, linear, early-approachable white wine with less mid-palate than the marl slopes below. Petit Chablis is the textbook example, but how much of that is down to the rock and how much to the flat position and the cooler air has not been settled.

A composite map code running from the Lower Kimmeridgian into the Portlandian, with at the top the hard, dense Barrois limestone, deposited in a shallow, increasingly enclosed sea as the Paris Basin dried out. In the soil it is compact rock that breaks into angular slabs; because it resists erosion well, it forms the flat plateaus above the vineyard slopes. Roughly 155 to 143 million years old, because this code lumps the Kimmeridgian and the Portlandian together.

For the vine. The soil on top is generally shallow and very stony, with free drainage and a small water reserve, so the vine comes under stress here sooner than on the marls lower down the slope. The active lime content is high, so the chlorosis risk is real and the choice of rootstock matters. On the flat plateau the advantage of the slope is absent: the altitude and the open exposure make it cooler, and without slope cold air does not drain away on clear nights, so budburst and ripening come later than on the flank.

Characteristic of the plateaus around Chablis, where most of Petit Chablis lies, and of the uplands of the Tonnerrois and the Châtillonnais.
