In the glass. Associated with taut wine with a pronounced line of acidity. Whether that is down to the rock or to the thin, warm, fast-drying soil above has not been settled; harvest timing and yield weigh more heavily. (weak indication)

Extremely fine-grained, dense limestone: lime mud that settled grain by grain in still, shallow and warm water. The term lithographic refers to the fineness of grain, because rock of this type was quarried elsewhere, at Solnhofen, as printing stone. It breaks with a smooth, almost porcelain-like surface and lies in even beds; Lower Kimmeridgian, about 155 to 152 million years old.

For the vine. Dense and barely porous, so water moves almost only through cracks and along the bedding. The soil on top is thin and stony, unless a slope deposit lies over it, and it dries out quickly in July and August. A stony surface layer warms up quickly during the day; how much of that reaches the bunch depends on aspect and row orientation, and the high active lime content remains a point of attention.

Occurs in the Châtillonnais and the Tonnerrois as a hard bed within the Kimmeridgian sequence, rarely planted on its own.
