In the glass. In practice these positions often yield generous, early-approachable village wines, with round fruit and less tension than the slopes above. That follows more from soil depth and water regime than from the rock itself.

A fan of stone, gravel and fine earth, spread out where a dry side valley opens onto the plain. The material was probably washed down from the combe largely during cold, sparsely vegetated phases of the Quaternary; the map deliberately assigns it no age. It is therefore by definition a mixture, and its character depends on what lay higher up, in Bourgogne usually limestone.

For the vine. The packing is coarse and loose, so excellently drained and quick to warm up, without standing water. There is generally more fine earth and more depth than on the slope above, which gives vigour and cushions drought stress; at the bottom of the fan the ground is finer and moister than at the top. With limestone debris, active lime is present, so rootstock choice remains a point of attention.

The fan of the Combe de Lavaux carries a large part of the village appellation Gevrey-Chambertin; comparable fans lie at the mouths of many combes along the Côte.
