In the glass. Usually lighter, fresh white and red wines than on the Kimmeridgian marl lower down the slope. In Chablis this lies outside the core of the grands and premiers crus.
Sandy to marly limestone full of sea urchins (the 'Calcaire à Spatangues'), deposited in a shallow, cool sea in the Hauterivian, Lower Cretaceous. In the Auxerrois and around Chablis it forms the hilltops and plateaus above the Jurassic beds, together with the other Lower Cretaceous units n2 and n4.
For the vine. Moderately deep, lime-rich soil with a fine sandy component: better drained than the Kimmeridgian marl, less water-retentive and slightly quicker to warm. It is the soil of the higher ground in the Auxerrois, often on plateau edges with wind and late frosts.
