In the glass. This is a rare substrate in Burgundy and there is too little systematic experience with it to give a flavour profile. What does count is the poor, quick-drying sandy profile, which limits vigour. (weak indication)

Coarse, feldspar-rich sandstone (arkose) with greenish sandy clays and beige dolomite, deposited in the Lower to Middle Triassic. The arkose is the Burgundian equivalent of the Buntsandstein and in several places rests directly on the weathered granite massif; the beige dolomite above it heralds the Middle Triassic. The sequence is thin and variable in thickness, because it fills the irregularities in the granite surface.

For the vine. Sandy and very permeable: the soil warms early, stays airy and holds little water, which on this substrate is the real risk in a dry summer. Roots go deep easily, which partly offsets the drought. The active lime content is low, so chlorosis rarely plays a part here and the choice of rootstock is freer; the downside is a poor soil with little buffer.

Occurs along the edge of the old crystalline massif in the Couchois and the west of the Côte chalonnaise, among other places near Aluze and Saint-Mard-de-Vaux.
