In the glass. Related to the upper slopes of Saint-Aubin and Santenay: tight, mineral Chardonnay and slender Pinot. Read as a tendency; altitude and aspect do a great deal.

White to beige, partly oolitic and reef limestone from the Middle and Upper Oxfordian (the former Rauracian), deposited on a warm, shallow carbonate platform. On the Côte de Beaune and in the Châtillonnais it forms the hard plateau edge and the upper slope above the Oxfordian marl.

For the vine. Hard, shallow and very free-draining: little water, high lime content, quick to warm. Roots depend on fissures and a thin cover of clay or scree. Usually the highest plots; cool because of the altitude.
