In the glass. Usually simpler, round wines with less tension than higher up the slope. Where Fu lies within a village appellation, the substrate helps explain why those plain plots rarely rank among the best.

Finely bedded, partly varved marl and clay, deposited in lakes and slow-flowing rivers on the edge of the Bresse graben in the latest Pliocene and earliest Pleistocene. It is the plain deposit at the foot of the Côte: the map draws it where the slope gives way to the lowland of the Saône. On other map sheets the same unit is called FLx.

For the vine. Heavy clay and marl with a high water-holding capacity and poor natural drainage; flat, cold in spring and prone to compaction. Usable only with drainage and a suitable rootstock, and then mainly for regional appellations.
