In the glass. On the stony parts usually ripe, round Chardonnay with an early harvest; on the marly parts more volume and less tension. Read this as a tendency within the Mâconnais, not as a fixed rule. (weak indication)

Conglomerate of rounded limestone pebbles in a sandy-marly matrix, alternating with softer molasse of sand and marl. Deposited in the Aquitanian, at the start of the Miocene, when rivers from the Mâconnais slopes carried debris down to the subsiding Bresse graben. In the Mâconnais the package forms the lower ridges and the transition to the plain.

For the vine. Where the pebbles dominate the soil is stony, free-draining and quick to warm, with limited fertility; where the molasse is marly it holds more water and becomes heavier. The profile changes over short distances and the map does not make that distinction at this scale.
