Bedrock

In the glass. Tends towards simple, soft wines. This substrate carries mainly regional appellations and Gamay; the better plots lie higher up on the Jurassic limestone. (weak indication)
Marl, clay, silt and sometimes calcareous sand with lignite-bearing layers and local lime concretions, deposited in the Bresse graben in the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. It is the fine-grained variant of the Bresse fill; p-IVB6 is the sandy counterpart. Lies on the plain and the low ridges east of the Mâconnais and the Côte Chalonnaise.
For the vine. Heavy and wet: a lot of clay, few stones, slow to warm and with a risk of standing water. The lime content varies; where it is calcareous, chlorosis comes into play. Suitable for the vine only on gentle slopes and with drainage.
Mâconnais and Chalonnais edge: Lugny, Chardonnay, Montbellet, Péronne, Boyer, Ozenay, Lacrost, Saint-Maurice-de-Satonnay, Mercurey and Mellecey (lower parts).
