In the glass. Tends towards fuller, darker wine with firm tannin and somewhat less aromatic finesse. This substrate says little on its own: slope position and soil depth determine almost everything here. (weak indication)

Dark, often black-grey clays and marls with interbeds of fossil-rich limestone, formed in a calm and temporarily oxygen-poor sea of the Early Jurassic. This is the classic Lias of Burgundy: soft, plastic and quick to weather, so it rarely reaches the surface clean. In the soil it feels heavy and greasy, with hard limestone nodules here and there and belemnites or ammonites.

For the vine. Heavy clay with a large water-holding capacity, cold and wet in spring and late in budburst, but with a reserve that counts in a hot summer. Drainage is the bottleneck, because without slope water sits on the clay and the roots suffocate. Active lime is usually limited, so chlorosis pressure is lower than on limestone, but the soil is fertile and calls for vigour control.

Occurs mainly on the edges of the Côte chalonnaise and the Mâconnais, where faults have brought the Lias up.
