In the glass. Associated in the trade with taut white wine with little opulence. The difference from the neighbouring lagoonal limestones is small and the cover layer above decides more than the rock beneath. (weak indication)
Beige, very fine-grained limestone consisting largely of hardened lime mud and containing few fossils, apart from a few beds packed with Astarte, a small burrowing bivalve. Deposited in a very shallow, well-sheltered lagoon on the warm platform, about 155 to 152 million years ago. This code and j6b are lithological variants within the same Lower Kimmeridgian level and not two successive ages.
For the vine. Fairly hard, regularly bedded rock that breaks up into flat slabs and yields a shallow, stony, fast-draining soil. It warms quickly and dries out quickly too, so the vine depends on how much fine material there is in the cover layer. Roots mainly follow the joints and the bedding, and the active lime content is high.
Outcrops on the slopes and plateau edges of the Tonnerrois and the Châtillonnais, usually beneath a cover of weathered material.
