Bedrock

  • 99%Kimmeridgian marl with Nanogyra 155–⁠149 million years

In the glass. Tends towards bright, acid-driven white wine with a saline impression, in the same vein as the Kimmeridgian of Chablis. For red the picture is far less clear-cut.

Grey-blue marl with intervening limestone beds, loaded with the small comma-shaped oyster Nanogyra virgula, called Exogyra virgula in the older literature. The same virgula facies as in Chablis and in the same Kimmeridgian band, but coded differently on this map sheet; the exact range within the stage need not coincide with that of j8. It weathers to a clayey, lime-rich soil in which the limestone beds lie at the surface as flat fragments.

For the vine. The alternation of marl and limestone beds provides, in theory, both reserve and drainage. Whether that actually works out that way in a plot depends on slope, soil depth and compaction. The active lime content is high, so chlorosis calls for attention in the choice of rootstock, and on flat ground the soil stays cold and wet.

Characteristic of the Châtillonnais around Châtillon-sur-Seine and Massingy, in the same Kimmeridgian band as Chablis and the Côte des Bar.
