In the glass. As a catch-all for old river deposits this code says little about style; the ratio of gravel to clay differs from plot to plot. Yield, vine age and soil depth weigh more heavily here than the material itself. (weak indication)

Gravel and sand that a river left behind long ago and that now lies high above the present valley. These are the oldest and highest terraces, Pliocene to early Pleistocene, roughly 3 to 1 million years old, although the dating differs per map sheet. Through long exposure the lime has largely disappeared, leaving red-brown clay with rounded quartz and quartzite pebbles; what it contains depends on the catchment the material came from.

For the vine. Excellently permeable and stony; the pebbles warm up by day and release that warmth again at night, although the measured effect on ripening is small. Lime has largely been leached out, so chlorosis poses little risk. The water reserve depends entirely on how much clay sits between the gravel; on almost pure gravel such a plot dries out quickly, and because the terrace lies flat it does not benefit from a slope.

No verifiable outcrop example included; the high terraces lie as remnants above the present valleys towards the Saône.
