In the glass. In practice it is mainly associated with white wine: broader and fuller than on hard limestone, and often described as slower to open up, although that depends at least as much on yield and vinification. The link runs through soil depth and water supply, not directly from rock to taste.
White marls and marly limestones from the Middle Oxfordian, referred to in the older French literature and on the geological map as faciès argovien. They were laid down on a quiet, relatively deep carbonate seabed where lime mud mixed with clay carried in from the land, roughly 159.5 to 157.5 million years ago. In the ground they are pale, crumbly layers that stick in rain and break up into flakes in drought, alternating with thin, harder limestone beds.
For the vine. Marl holds water, and that is the key property here: in a dry summer there is reserve in the subsoil and the roots can penetrate to considerable depth as long as the layer is not compacted. The downside is that the ground stays cold and heavy in spring and is hard to work after rain, so these marls almost always need slope and good drainage to perform as vineyard soil. The active lime content is high, so chlorosis is a real risk and the choice of rootstock matters.
Characteristic of the slopes around Chagny, Rully and Bouzeron, and of the upper slopes of the Corton hill where Corton-Charlemagne stands.
