In the glass. In Chablis and the Tonnerrois ground for light, fresh white wine on the highest plots; the core of Chablis stands on the Kimmeridgian marl beneath. The scree from this limestone (GP, E) matters more to the vineyard than the slab itself.
White, fine-grained, partly oolitic limestone, 55 to 80 metres thick, deposited on a warm, shallow platform in the Upper Oxfordian. It is the famous building stone of Tonnerre and the hard plateau cap above the Serein and the Armançon; the same unit as j6a and j6aT on other map sheets.
For the vine. Shallow, hard and strongly draining, with a high lime content: dry, quick to warm, little root space. Where it forms the plateaus around Chablis it is mainly woodland and arable land; vineyards lie on the edge and on the scree derived from it.
