In the glass. Tends towards full, broad wines with somewhat lower acidity, in whites often generous and soft in texture. Great tension rarely comes of its own accord here; it has to come from site, yield and work in the cellar.

Fine mud that settled roughly 186 to 185 million years ago in a shallow sea. The glittering mica was presumably supplied from an eroding Variscan massif nearby, which indicates that land lay close by. The result is a soft, grey-blue marl without hard beds, which weathers at the surface into heavy, clayey ground.

For the vine. This marl retains a great deal of water, considerably more than the stony limestone and granite soils in this list, which is an advantage in a hot summer. Against that, the ground stays cold and wet in spring, buds late and compacts easily when worked. This soil needs a slope and some stone at the surface, otherwise it becomes heavy and sluggish.

No verifiable outcrop example included; the unit lies in narrow strips within the Lias of the Mâconnais and the Côte Chalonnaise.
