In the glass. Old alluvium says little about style in itself. Where these terraces carry vines it is usually a matter of flat, more spacious positions, and yield, vine age and the amount of fine material between the pebbles are more decisive than the rock.
Gravel, cobbles and coarse sand deposited by a river, probably in the Quaternary, although the map does not fix the age; the material was then left in place as the river cut deeper. The material comes from higher up, so the composition follows the catchment: pebbles of granite and quartz for a river from the massif, limestone for a river from the plateau. It is therefore by definition a mixture.
For the vine. Gravel and coarse sand drain excellently and warm up quickly, so the soil reaches temperature early in spring. The downside is a small moisture reserve; only where silt or clay sits between the stones does such a soil last out a dry summer. The roots go deep if the terrace layer is thick, and lime usually plays no part, unless the cobbles themselves consist of limestone.
Mainly on the low terraces towards the Saône, below the slopes of the Mâconnais and in the low foreland of the Beaujolais.
