In the glass. Tends towards somewhat straighter, less broad wine than the marl-rich lower part of the slope. The difference is subtle and in practice is overshadowed by position and soil depth.

The upper part of the same Kimmeridgian package, roughly 152 to 149 million years old. Here too limestone beds and marls alternate, but higher in the sequence the limestone beds gain in weight and hardness, towards the much harder Portlandian limestones that cap the plateaux. The French map term Kimmeridgien is a regional division and does not coincide exactly with the international stage (154.8 to 149.2 million years), so the age given is an approximation.

For the vine. Slightly less water-retentive and slightly stonier than the marl-rich base below, often with a thinner soil and more loose limestone grit at the surface. That gives fast drainage and a soil that warms up readily, but the reserve for a dry August is smaller. A high active lime content remains a point of attention.

Found at the upper edge of the Chablis slopes, where the package passes into the hard Portlandian limestones of the plateaux.
