In the glass. Plots on this bed often give wines with fairly high acidity, which follows mainly from the shallow soil depth and the early harvesting that goes with it. With little soil and a warm summer that quickly tips over into stress.
Limestone from the early Middle Jurassic, roughly 175 to 173 million years ago, formed on a shallow sea floor where sedimentation was slow. It was precisely that slowness that allowed small round iron-bearing grains to form, the ooids, which give the rock an ochre-yellow to rust-brown colour. In the southern Beaujolais this bed belongs to the same Aalenian as the pierres dorées, but the building stone itself is the crinoidal limestone lying above it; the ferruginous oolite is the thin, condensed bed at the base.
For the vine. A hard, well-drained limestone that gives a shallow, stony and warm soil, with many fragments at the surface that hold warmth by day. The moisture reserve is limited and the roots have to seek out fissures and cracks in the bed, so the thickness of the clay above is decisive. Active lime is present, so chlorosis is a real point of attention on the poorest spots.
In the southern Beaujolais (Rhône département, outside Bourgogne) this bed belongs to the Aalenian of the pierres dorées, where the villages are built of this golden-yellow stone.
