In the glass. In practice gives firm, somewhat austere wine with clear acidity. The literature on this soil in Burgundy is thin, so read this as an indication and not as a rule. (weak indication)
Hard, dark grey to blue-grey limestone beds alternating with marl, packed with the thick curved oyster Gryphaea and with ammonites, deposited in shallow and muddy seawater of the Early Jurassic. It is the first prominent ridge-forming limestone bed above the Trias; the Hettangian beneath it already yields limestone, but rarely forms a distinct ridge. The stone is less pure than the limestone of the Côte, because it contains a lot of clay.
For the vine. A limestone ridge with a shallow, stony soil on top and clay in between, well drained and quick to warm, but with little reserve on the thin parts. Where the beds are well fissured, rooting can reach further than the visible soil depth suggests; how far varies greatly from plot to plot. Active lime is present but usually lower than on pure limestone, so chlorosis is a moderate risk.
Occurs in the Côte chalonnaise and on the western edge of the Mâconnais, where the Lias protrudes above the Trias.
