In the glass. Tends towards rounder, riper wines with more volume than pronounced tension, in whites often broad in texture. Much depends on the ratio of marl to stone in the plot, more than on the formation as a whole. (weak indication)

Deposits of a shallow, turbid Jurassic sea, roughly 186 to 184 million years ago. The package alternates between grey-blue marl and harder beds of clayey to sandy limestone, so that the soil can differ greatly from plot to plot. In the ground you see crumbly, plastic marl with slabs of stone in between that stabilise the slope.

For the vine. Marl retains water, which in a dry summer is an insurance and in a wet spring a handicap: the ground stays cold and is slow to get going. The harder sandy limestone beds improve drainage and make the subsoil more accessible to roots. Without a slope such a soil quickly becomes too wet; with a slope it retains water without becoming saturated, which makes the water supply over the season more even than on the thin limestone soils, at a moderate to high active lime content.

Outcrops in strips at the foot of the limestone slopes, among other places in the Mâconnais and along the Côte Chalonnaise.
