In the glass. Associated with firm, structured red wine with clear tannin, as in the premiers crus of Fixin, Gevrey and Marsannay. Read as a tendency; slope position and soil depth weigh heavily.
Hard, coarse-grained limestone built up from fragments of sea lilies (entroques), deposited in an agitated shallow sea around the boundary between the Aalenian and the Bajocian. The same 'Calcaire à entroques' as j2 and j2a, mapped more broadly on the Dijon sheet. On the Côte de Nuits it forms the hard lower slope and the edges of the combes.
For the vine. Shallow, stony and strongly draining; roots follow the fissures in the hard rock. Little water, quick to warm, high lime content. Classic Pinot Noir ground where a thin layer of clay or colluvium completes the profile.
