In the glass. In practice yields supple, early-drinking wine with less concentration. That has more to do with soil depth, fertility and flat position than with the alluvium itself. (weak indication)

Old river deposits that have not been subdivided further: clayey loam with gravel, locally with fragments of chailles, hard siliceous nodules left behind as insoluble residue from the Jurassic limestone. The deposit dates from the Pleistocene, which begins 2.58 million years ago, and lies in the plain and on old terrace remnants. It is by definition a mixture, because what it contains depends on which rocks the river cut into upstream.

For the vine. Deep, often fertile soil with a large water-holding capacity and a clayey, sometimes poorly draining subsoil. The chailles and the gravel make the profile locally stonier and better drained; they are lime-free, but they do not determine the pH of the soil, which follows from the clayey-loamy matrix, so chlorosis pressure has to be measured plot by plot. A flat position means cold air, frost risk and little natural drainage.

Lies at the foot of the Côte and in the plain towards the Saône, where mainly the regional appellations are found.
