In the glass. These marls say little about the wine in themselves. Their influence runs mainly through the water supply, so that they turn out favourably in dry years and are heavy and late in wet years. (weak indication)

Deposit of shallow lakes and lagoons left behind when the sea withdrew from the Paris Basin: white to beige marl with beds of freshwater limestone full of small water snails between them. The limestone is soft to moderately hard, the marl clayey and locally gypsum-bearing. Middle Eocene, Upper Bartonian, roughly 38.5 to 37.7 million years.

For the vine. Marl with limestone beds retains moisture and stays cool and heavy in spring; on a slope that works well, on flat ground it quickly becomes too wet. The clay fraction gives reserve in dry summers; where the limestone beds are fissured they provide drainage and root channels, but that is not the case everywhere. The soils are rich in lime, and where gypsum occurs the ground can locally be saline and difficult to work.
