In the glass. In Champagne this substrate is associated with a fresher, tighter style than the surrounding sand. The plots are small; the influence is more a nuance in the blend than a style of its own. (weak indication)
Alternation of hard limestone beds, marl and rubbly 'caillasses' from the late Lutetian, Middle Eocene, deposited in a shallow warm sea on the edge of the Paris Basin. In the western Vallée de la Marne it forms a lime-rich step in the slope between the Eocene sand and the Brie plateaus.
For the vine. Shallow, dry and very lime-rich: free-draining and quick to warm, but with a lot of active lime and thus a chlorosis risk. The water regime depends on the marl beds.
