In the glass. Generally yields broader, rounder and earlier-approachable wine than the limestone beds above or below. The marl says little on its own as long as soil depth and slope angle are unknown.

A soft sequence of marl and marly limestone that forms the transition between two hard limestone formations, deposited when the sea became deeper and more turbid at the end of the Bajocian and the start of the Bathonian. It includes the well-known Marnes à Ostrea acuminata, packed with small oysters. In the landscape it is recognisable as a flat, grassy bench between two escarpments, often with springs and wet patches.

For the vine. Marl retains water and nutrients; on this bench the soil is deep and cool and stays wet for a long time in spring. That provides a clear reserve in dry years, but it requires slope and controlled vigour, otherwise the vegetation becomes too lush. Active lime is present, so chlorosis plays a part, and because water sits on the marl the bench is prone to subsidence and slippage.

In the Hautes-Côtes and the Mâconnais it forms the soft intermediate bench between the Bajocian and the Bathonian limestone, usually recognisable by the spring line.
