In the glass. Tends towards wine with somewhat more flesh and breadth and slightly later ripening than the hard limestone beds. Because the code covers an entire stage the spread is wide and a statement about flavour here is above all an expectation.
The same sea as j5a, but the code covers the whole Oxfordian, and so also the harder limestones of the Upper Oxfordian. The proportion of marl therefore varies greatly from map sheet to map sheet. In the soil predominantly grey-blue and crumbly, with intervening slabby limestone beds; Oxfordian, about 162 to 155 million years old.
For the vine. A water-retaining substrate that provides a clear reserve in dry years, but warms slowly in spring and becomes heavy when wet. The roots go readily into the marl as long as there is slope to carry the water away; on flat stretches it quickly becomes too cold and too wet. The active lime content varies greatly with the proportion of limestone, so chlorosis is a separate question for each plot.
Mainly on the upper slopes and in the Hautes-Côtes, where the marl bands form broad zones.
