In the glass. Tends towards approachable, fruity base wines with softer acidity than on the chalk. For sparkling wine that is mainly a matter of blending and house style; the sand itself does not determine the style.
Fine, well-sorted quartz sand with locally cemented sandstone beds, deposited in a shallow sea and along the coast in the Bartonian, Middle Eocene. In Champagne this sand lies halfway up the slope, above the clay and the Lutetian limestone and below the limestone and meulière of the Brie plateaus. The same formation as e6aB on other map sheets.
For the vine. Light, poor, free-draining and quick to warm, with little active lime; drought-prone in a warm summer, but in the cool Champagne climate above all an early, even budburst and good drainage. On these sandy slopes in the Vallée de la Marne and the western Montagne de Reims there is a great deal of Meunier.
