In the glass. This limestone slab itself rarely carries vineyard. Where it does, the profile is meagre and strongly vintage-dependent; no flavour profile of its own can be attached to it.

Hard, beige, fine-grained limestone beds: the Calcaire de Tonnerre, the Calcaire d'Oisellemont and the limestone with Astarte shells. The Calcaire de Tonnerre belongs to the Upper Oxfordian, the limestone with Astarte to the Lower Kimmeridgian; the unit therefore straddles the stage boundary. The sequence is locally several tens of metres thick, for the Calcaire de Tonnerre alone a figure of about fifty metres is quoted, and it forms cuestas and plateau edges above the marl slopes.

For the vine. A compact limestone slab with usually a thin, very stony soil on top, where water sinks away immediately and the reserve is small. Roots have to follow fissures, and where the slab reaches the surface the site is truly meagre. The active lime content is high, and without a blanket of weathered material or colluvium this substrate is marginal for the vine.

Forms the plateau edges of the Tonnerrois and the Châtillonnais, above the Kimmeridgian marls on which the vineyard itself usually lies.

The name

The quarry: perrière is the old word for a place where stone was broken. Roserot gives Perrière entries in several communes, each with its own history, and for Meursault the name alone does not say which quarry it was or from when.
